The bright flash went off and Mark blinked, hoping he’d been able to keep his eyes open long enough to take the picture. His heart gave an odd lurch and he felt a little sick; he wrote it off as first week of school nerves. Picture day was his least favorite, too. He didn’t ever like his school picture, and this was possibly the most important one. He was a freshman in high school now, after all, so this picture was going to be on his new school ID card.
